OS Credential Dumping: LSASS Memory

Threat Actors may attempt to access credential material stored in the process memory of the Local Security Authority Subsystem Service (LSASS). After a user logs on, the system generates and stores a variety of credential materials in LSASS process memory. These credential materials can be harvested by an administrative user or SYSTEM and used to conduct Lateral Movement using Use Alternate Authentication Material.

Mitigations

This type of attack technique cannot be easily mitigated with preventive controls since it is based on the abuse of system features.
